FSC Packaging Claims: Checking the Chain of Custody

How should a buyer verify an FSC claim on custom paper packaging?

Connect the exact packaging item to an eligible supplier, a current and relevant certification record, the agreed sales-document claim and the approved label artwork. A certificate PDF or a logo in a quotation is only part of that chain. Before ordering, ask who will sell the finished packaging with the claim and which organization is responsible for the label approval.

This is a procurement evidence workflow, not a statement that PACKRIVA or any proposed production partner holds certification. PACKRIVA coordinates packaging development and sourcing; any certification claim must be established for the actual parties, product and order. Do not describe an ordinary board option as FSC-certified because another product from the same supplier was eligible.

Start with the intended claim and transaction

Write down whether the requirement concerns certified packaging supplied with an FSC claim, an on-pack label, or promotional communication by your brand. These are related but different requests. Identify the paper components included, the finished product description, the selling entity and the party buying the packaging. Include separate inserts or sleeves rather than leaving their status implicit.

FSC's chain of custody overview explains the role of material tracking and records through production and distribution. Use that explanation to ask how your order will be handled; it is not proof that a particular box or transaction qualifies. For your structure and substrate choices, keep the separate paperboard selection record.

The official FSC Search provides certification and licensing records and time-stamped downloads. Search using the actual organization and codes supplied, retain the checked record and date, and investigate mismatched names. A valid record alone does not establish that every item sold by that organization is supplied with an FSC claim.

Agree the document and artwork handoff before purchase

Ask for the proposed order-line wording and the document fields that will identify the certified item. Have the responsible certified organization confirm the applicable claim and sales-document requirements against FSC-STD-40-004. Resolve uncertainties with the relevant certification body or FSC team rather than inventing a simplified chain-of-custody rule for every trading arrangement.

For artwork, identify which label version applies and who obtains the necessary approval. Treat the label as controlled content. A last-minute size, language, color or placement change should return to that responsible approval route. Keep its approval evidence with the same released PDF and dieline revision used for production. Ordinary brand artwork approval does not automatically cover trademark eligibility.

Illustrative decision: the board is available, but the claim is unclear

Suppose two quotations offer the same box structure. One identifies the finished item, selling organization, intended claim and label approval responsibility. The other attaches a board mill certificate without explaining the finished-pack transaction. This hypothetical comparison does not prove the second route cannot qualify. It shows which questions must be answered before comparing the offers as equivalent certified packaging.

If an insert or stock option changes during sampling, reopen the evidence register. Decide whether to retain the original requirement, seek a documented eligible alternative, or revise the packaging brief. Keep commercial availability separate from claim acceptance. Neither a good sample nor a deadline supplies missing certification evidence.

Buyer release checklist

  • Identify the finished item, included paper components and intended use of the claim.
  • Record selling entity, relevant codes, current verification date and scope questions.
  • Confirm the proposed order and sales-document claim with the responsible organization.
  • Retain label approval linked to the released artwork revision.
  • Check delivered documents and record substitutions before accepting the claim evidence.

FSC status does not answer whether the complete pack is recyclable in the destination market. Handle that separately using the packaging recyclability claims guide. To discuss a project with PACKRIVA, prepare the box and component specification, destination markets, intended label use, proposed claim and any supplier documents already received. These inputs make a sourcing enquiry specific without implying certification before verification.
